I still have no proper crafting desk and this week for some reason I have been working on the floor its actually really comfortable and gives me plenty of space to make a mess in! So here's a look at what's going on on my desk/floor this week.
As you can see the floor has sort of been taken over with crafting. In the top left I have one of my storage boxes which I use to keep all my various adhesives and scissors and craft knives in. In the middle is one of my smaller storage boxes which contains my alphabet stamps and quilling papers. I also have two excellent craft books out one is Martha Stewart's craft encyclopedia and the other is Craft Wisdom and Know How. Both these books are perfect for newbie crafters lots of hints, tips, tutorials and fun projects to get started with. I also have my dinner in the top right I love to craft whilst chilling out over dinner hence the pizza in this photo.
As you can see I had been reading about the art of quilling. It was a technique I had never tried before so decided that I would practice a few of the shapes that were shown in various books to see if I could get the hang of it before using it on a card, this way if I wasn't any good at it I wouldn't mess up a card. Both books offer step by step instructions for various shapes so I got my quilling papers out along with the quilling tool and started practicing.
The technique is a little fiddely but very fun to see how easy it is to make a whole range of shapes some more complicated than others. The 3D effect looks great too and I have tons of ideas of how I can use quilling on cards and other crafty makes now I have got the hang of it.
I made a wide range of different shapes including a flower, teardrop, scroll, heart and various circles. I think the effect is ace and cant wait to try different shapes and papers. So yes this week my desk is filled with quilling and for anyone that hasn't tried this technique yet give it a go it really is great fun. This is what I love so much about crafting such a huge array of new skills to learn and master, I look forward to getting round all your desks this week and finding new techniques, crafts and projects that your all doing and giving them a go myself.
Having read your blog profile and seen how new you are to this, I am impressed at what you have done so far! I haven't tried quilling, but it looks good fun...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilling, there are some amazing projects on the internet. Will be lovely to see more pics of what you create.

Stunning quilling, I have never tired quilling but I must as it looks so beautiful, Hugs May x x x x
ReplyDeleteMy knees wouldn't let me stay down there on the floor and, even worse, it would be a problem getting up. Well done having such patience to do quilling!

welcome to the world of crafting. I love seeing a newbie and guarentee you will pick up lots of tips and hints once you get around the blogs. I cant wait to see what direction you go and to see some more of your crafting. Happy Crafting Sharne XX ( Fresh as a Daisy)
ReplyDeleteGreat quilling! That's one technique I don't think about often to put on my cards but I don't see why not. My back doesn't like me sitting on the floor these days which is sad because the floor is a whole lot of open space! Well, some open spaces.... I have a lot of stuff.
ReplyDeleteThat looks awesome! I have never tried quilling. I was always convinced that I'd go through all the effort, and then they would squish in the mail. However, I may just have to give it a try! Thanks for sharing your space! (Desks are over rated anyways)! Happy WOYWW- Amanda 40
ReplyDeleteCongrats, crafting is a great distraction from long working hours and the stress (how many of us here relax)...though from a small box before you know it, you'll have a dedicated craft desk...then basically your home will be crammed full of stuff!!!
ReplyDeleteHaving a browse through your blog, I love your lanterns also.

Awww, your post brought me right back to when I was little and my mom did quilling and taught me a little bit. It is such a pretty craft and you seem to have the hang of it already!
ReplyDeleteHappy WOYWW!

Hi again,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't find a way to private message you, I was wondering if you would like me to send you a few magazines I have collected here? They are mostly from Stampington and Company - "Somerset Studio" and "Art Journaling" - just let me know! Not sure if you are interested, they are mixed media and art journaling mags but you seem game to try things! You can link to my email from my blog!
xoxo

ReplyDeleteI played with quilling a number of years ago and loved it, the little shapes always look so fabulous on tags and cards. I'm not sure the floor is the place for me to craft... getting a bit old for all that bending and contornioning... hmmm.. din't think it wa s word!! :)
ReplyDeleteI've not tried quilling but it looks like you are doing well with it. Well done on embarking on this very addictive passtime!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have been very successful with your first foray into quilling! There are so many different techniques to learn in crafting its great fun discovering them all! Thanks for visiting me and happy crafting!! Hugs Susan x
ReplyDeleteCan I tell you a secret, even though I have three craft desks I do a lot of work on the floor! :) You mentioned wanted to get the e-clips, I must admit I don't get a lot of use out of mine. It cuts well and great for those special projects. Thanks for the visit. :)
ReplyDeletehmmm pizza, fabulous use of space, I cant craft on the floor, hurts my back!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm I want to eat Pizza Now! :o) you're doing great with the quilling! Looking forward to seeing some card designs x
ReplyDeleteWell done, that quilling is very pretty and delicate. I have never tried that skill. I am another person who loves trying new skills. My latest play session is making rosettes. I don't have a die or anything else to help, just a guillotine, a circle punch, and my fingers. So far they seem to be working out quite well, and it has saved me the money to buy the die. Thank you for your visit this week. Have a good week. Maggie #70
ReplyDeletebeautiful quilling thank you for visiting me
DeleteYou've reminded me I have a small stash of quilling tools and papers that I haven't used in ages, yet it's such a fun and relaxing thing to do. I also loved the bands of quilling paper too, lovely colours. The floor is a great crafting space, oft overlooked! You can really spread out but be careful of that glue on the carpet!

ReplyDeleteOh I think I wouldn't be able to get up again if I crafted on the floor - lol! Your quilling looks perfect, that's one thing I haven't tried (yet!!).
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my desk too

Its ages since I have done any quilling. Owls make a nice shape to quill. I am having a rest from making little frocks - I have been making children's dressing up outfits for a friend instead!! Have a good week. x Jo
ReplyDeleteQuilling was one of the first paper crafts I tried years ago but haven't done any for ages. Your flowers are gorgeous. You must have so much patience.

ReplyDeleteI'm always using the floor for extra room when I craft! Its such a great place. I love your quilling project. I've never done it before, but the books you recommend seem very helpful. I'm going to see if my library has one so I can try this out!
